Visit to Guillaume Bijl’s exhibition with the Guillaume Bijl Estate
Step into the world of Guillaume Bijl at Kunsthal Extra City for the first posthumous exhibition of his work In Remembrance of the Earldom of Watou. In the former Dominican church, Bijl’s remarkable installation is reconstructed for the first time in 24 years: a fictional-historical museum, a banquet hall and The Early Years of the Earldom of Watou — the only theatre piece in his oeuvre.
The visit takes place in the presence of representatives of the Guillaume Bijl Estate, Nadia Bijl en Ulrike Lindmayr, alongside Extra City’s general and artistic director Anthony Hudek and business director Rachelle Dufour — a special opportunity to discover the story behind this extraordinary work.
Inspired by the history of Watou, a West Flemish border village once elevated to an earldom, the exhibition blurs fact and fiction with Bijl’s distinctive humour and critical eye. Guests can also explore the actors’ dressing room, where costumes and a recording of the original performance offer a glimpse behind the scenes.
